The musical Matilda is based off a novel by the famous author Roald Dahl. It first became a major successful screen film in 1996, before its later reproduction into one of the most enjoyed Broadway theatrical performances. Matilda is centred around a special girl, the main character, who harbours secret powers few know about. She is the 5 years old daughter of Harry and Zinnia Wormwood, and was born with the power of telekinesis. The Wormwood family is a peculiar one, with a mum who is heavily obsessed with the showbiz business and a sleazy father who makes a living selling used-cars that he sometimes passes as new. Matilda does have a brother, who is pretty much like his parents, lazy and scheming. Matilda is somewhat the 'black sheep' of the family because of her kind-hearted and honest persona, and the secret gift she uses for good. She drowns her family problems by locking herself behind her bedroom walls and binge on her favourite books. The musical adaptation was written by Dennis Kelly while Tim Minchin developed the musical soundtracks and lyrics. The first successful musical performance of Matilda debuted in the 2010 at the Stratford-upon-Avon theatre in Britain. Several other performances followed, all in the UK, with the West End premier happening at the Cambridge Theatre (2011), and the Broadway premier being held at the Shubert theatre (2013). The first American musical tour of Matilda was launched in 2015 before it finally broke out into an international stage performance enjoyed globally. This successful Broadway adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel has received a number of accolades like the 2012 and 2013 Olivier Awards, The New York Drama Critic Circle award for best musical, and 5 exclusive Tony Awards in 2013, including the Tony Award of Best Book for Musical.
